jack and 4 on the floor

Hotel Cafe on Cahuenga Blvd in LA is amazing.  You show up and the door says enter side door...so you proceed down the side alley and you start to get slightly uncomfortable ... where's that side door.  now your in the back alley and people are standing around smoking cigarettes in front of an inconspicuous door with that classic piece of paper taped to the door showing set-times in a beautiful 16 pt Times New Roman font...and thats about it ..  open the metal double doors and step into a new world.  the front bar, or should i say back bar either was or just really looks like a hotel lobby from the 50's ..  dingy furniture, dark lighting and the sound of pedal steel and upright piano streaming through the dark twisted hallways.

sat down and followed the instructions of the atmosphere and got comfortable with some jack.

awesome lyricist..  check out the track "Guess What".

http://www.myspace.com/thewacotragedies
great musicians.

it was a great night...i highly recommend checking out both bands and catching a show at Hotel Cafe if you get a chance.

anyways....

project for this weekend = get a new car.  looks like for 8 grand i can get a 3 wheeler that plugs into the wall.  sounds good to me.  whatever happened to hover crafts...i thought those were gonna take over the world when i was younger.  maybe i'll see if i can get one of those with a salvage title.

here's the frequently asked question page from hotel cafe's website...www.hotelcafe.com

its pretty amazing

A: No.

Q: Do you have an open mic night?
A: No.

Q: You should.
A: No.

Q: I am a music reviewer for an online magazine you've never heard of. We get 150 unique hits per day... I don't have a business card, but I would appreciate being on the "House List" every night to photo-review acts that preform at...
A: No.

Q: But I have a camera.
A: So do I.

Q: Do you allow fliming in the Hotel Cafe?

A: No...

Q: That seems harsh...

Q: What happened to the pool table?
A: It’s gone.

Q: Do you still have the open jazz jam?
A: No.

Q: Why?
A: Because no one in LA appreciates jazz.

Q: That’s sad.
A: Yes. Yes it is.

new year's resolution = stop filling my sentences with like (sounds pretty shallow, but something i really need to stop...makes me sound like a moron.)

my new clothing project

friends and enemies unite..and wear my t-shirts.

I’ve spent countless hours on the tour bus, planes or in the van traveling from city to city and country to country biding my time on my trusty dusty laptop designing things including the awesome shirts at ltlbackspace.com.  ive wanted to launch my own creative outlet online for some time now and its finally there for everyone to see.  its just the start, but im super stoked to actually have some shirts printed up for you to see and possibly buy, so please if you have a second go check it out!!

Hope everyone is rad!

live to love,
joey

futons and floors

i was told i was sleeping on a futon.  no problem i slept on a futon all through college...sounds great!

...im sleeping on the floor. im in a 12' x 12' room with nothing but a small table, a thin comforter on the floor (also known as a futon in japan - ding!), and some stolen wi-fi coming from somewhere in Hakone, a lovely town in the Japanese countryside in which i am spending my day off.

i momentarily got kicked out of the onsen (Japanese Hot Spring) for having long hair until i realized i wasnt getting kicked out they just thought i was Mr. Green whom had a phone call at the front desk.  i guess i was supposed to deduct that them pointing to their hair meant Mr. Green you have a phone call.  it was a weird game of charades...and unfortunately my impecable record was dealt a minor blow.  i should have been able to figure it out...come on Zehr. duh!

hotel manager guy pointing to me
then motioning out of the onsen
then pointing to his hair.
repeat several times

Ahhh yes..Obvious!! i've got it.  You must be looking for Mr. Green!!!

i will get up tomorrow at 7am to catch the first train back to tokyo so i can be there to do a full day of press.  but wait! its sunday!  did god not rest on sunday in japan!  not everything about religion is messed up you see...sundays off = good idea...and saturdays and mondays too...its like a grace period to sunday.

i can't understand you japanese tv.

IM IN BANGKOK!?

hey everyone...im sitting on the 16 floor of my hotel right now overlooking the city of bangkok.  im about 6 days into my asia tour with about 26 to go.  we just got done doing 3 shows in the philippines and they were all fantastic...i think we played for about 30,000 people.  not bad...however its still no jersey.  i had a nice serving of pig ears and face yesterday...yes...pig ears and face.  its called sisig or something like that....for as gnarly as it sounds it was actually pretty good!  manila was crazy...our songs are or have been number one on most of the stations...pretty radical considering the last time i checked most stations in the US were using the records as door stops while they wait around and get some kind of corporate order from their offices in outer space to play it.  getting ready to do some shows with the black eyed peas...should be pretty awesome.  its very surreal to be playing shows in thailand...  i want to see the countryside in all these places...as carni as i am and as much as i love cities i feel like im over metropolising (you can use that) for a little bit and need to swim in the river and get leeches on me and nature stuff like that...reconnect with the earth.  ill probably just order some green tea.  anyways....everything is really good...the band is going strong, i got samples prints of my shirts im making (myspace.com/livetolovemymyspace) and will be selling those very soon, im healthy (well as healthy as a jet-lagged person can be), and im on the 16th floor of my hotel room in bangkok.  schweet.  hope everyone is doing good!

homeroom was great,

Modern Minds and Pastimes

hey everyone.  its been a while!  after a morning of early am press im
currently fighting the urge to pass out in this crowded van im in
right now...and i figured what better way than to write a little
something on my foe page.   a whole lot of stuff has been happening
with us lately.  our second record came out this week...pretty crazy.
we all feel really fortunate to have been given the oportunity to do
all of this again!  the record is quite differet than the first.  it's
certainly a deeper more reflective record than "greetings from imrie
house".  we titled it "modern minds and pastimes" which sort of sums
up the record in that we've always considered ourselves to be modern
minds...music fans who really try to continue to enjoy and learn from
whats happening in music and the world today as well as our insistent
fascination with decades past.  we really let our minds and ears float
to our favorite artists of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and today
and interwove those influences to create something unique..something
modern yet respectful to the path of rock and roll that has come
before us.  its different this time around because there isnt some
kind of fancy media blowout to go along with it..just the music.
hopefully people will get a chance to hear it and be able to feel
everything we put into it!  we are proud of the record, proud of each
other and proud and thankful of our fans for still being with us.  im
too tired right now to think about the long haul ahead of us working
non-stop to get these songs to as many ears as possible, but i will
say we are all realy really psyched to be doing it all again!

can't wait to start seeing familiar faces!  talk soon!

p.s. i will try to be a better friend and/or enemy and keep you posted
from the road now tha ive figured out how to do it all from my cell
phone.

Fooseball and Field Drums

home with my parents for the holiday weekend.

"its been far too long since you've posted anything on your myspace" - mom

"what do you mean" - me

"i mean the last blog was just a picture" - mom

"what are you talking about, what picture" - me

"i don't know i keep going back to check to see if there is anything new with the band and the last thing that was posted was that picture of you wearing a headband and a bandana" - mom

"oh you mean my friends or enemies page?" - me

"i don't know.  whatever it is, the last thing is that picture and its been like that forever" - mom

"yeah but its an awesome picture" - me

"yeah but you could have at least wrote something to go along with it" - mom

"mom just wait a month and you'll have more stuff involving the band to look at than you'll be able to keep up with" - me

"he's busy he's working on the record" - dad

"thats right" - me

"okay....whatever." - mom

"hmm better post something, its been a while" - me to myself

----

trust me i've been hard at work.  i spend 12 hours a day in the studio burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars of atlantic records money cutting beer boxes apart to aquire new sponsorships for our fooseball league.

(notice the hanging coors light score box with internal light and everything...pretty sick if you ask me)

---

no but seriously, been riding a crazy wave recently.  we parted ways with our old singer back in november and have just released the first single "Jenny" off of our new record with our new singer...you can listen to it here http://www.myspace.com/theclick5 .  its been an amazing experience recording this record....i am really proud of everything thats going into it.  its amazing going through the last 3 years touring pretty much non-stop and hearing all of those experiences pour out onto this record musically and emotionally.  i think, or at least i hope, this record is going to hit people in a very good way.  i can't wait for people to put on their favorite pair of headphones and hear the late night sessions of field drums and melletron strings.  as much as i am enjoying making this record and playing in fooseball tournaments i'm also starting to catch the tour bug again and i'm getting eager to head back out on the road this summer to play all of these new songs...not completely sure when its going to start, but once it does its going to get insane.  good friends and the road is pretty hard to beat.

2nd season of lost dvd is calling my name (like i said we are working really hard).

hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

colts won - or so i hear

dearest friends and enemies

its been far too long.  its cold and its rainy which makes it a perfect day to update all of you emo kids.  just kidding.  i figured I should write because I went to the “friends or enemies” tour stop last night in boston.

It was a rather fresh day.  Fresh because I didn’t sit in my underwear all day watching bad tv and trying to better my nonexistent skills on my wacom tablet that I just bought.

Woke up and took the subway into the city, hit up the mall where I returned a messenger bag that was worth 50 bucks, and then re-bought the same bag from the same store for 10 bucks because they were going out of business.

Hell yeah, now I have 40 more dollars and a bag still for doing absolutely nothing.  A very sweet little gift from god obviously.

Wish I was good at just putting money in my pocket and not spending it, but of course within 10 minutes I found something to blow it on.

$25 – “Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama

$14 – “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini

In a world where reading text is usually free…its always weird to pay so much for books.

I need to take my cheap ass to the library obviously.

 4:30 Colts vs. Ravens

me and ben trying to act like normal dudes sitting in a booth eating nachos and drinking beers while watching the colts beat the ravens.  Topic of conversation keeps switching back and forth between ben asking me over and over again “why do our fans always get mad at us” and me bragging about how I took a now colts cheerleader to prom. (not as cool as it sounds, if it even sounds cool to anyone but myself. she had a boyfriend who met us at the after party and I didn’t see her once after that haha.)

anyways, true to form, judging by the look on the persons face sitting next to us we are idiots and left the game in the middle of the 4th quarter completely oblivious to the fact that the game was now getting really good.  but we were more concerned with catching new found glory’s set.

Both nfg and fob (get off my abbrev skills) were good.  new found glory inspires me in the fact that they are still together, still doing their thing, and still loving it.  I think they must have started at least 8 or 9 years ago.

It was fun watching fall out boy in that size venue, its obvious they're all just a bunch of buddies, normal ass dudes having fun playing music.

good times…except for the no alcohol thing?  This was the first show I’ve ever been to at the Avalon that didn’t serve brewskys.  I can tolerate the b.o. of concerts when its mixed in with the smell of booze.  But b.o. only…come on now.

up to this point…day is good…nothing blowing my mind, but good.

enter blowing my mind

so after the show me and ben go over to this bar that he used to work at called jake ivories.  Anyone whos been to landsdowne street knows this one bouncer, at least would recognize him.  we’ll call him dude.    he’s the baddest dude in all of boston, he's gotta be in his 60's and he kind of just roams the street all night going from club to club just being in his long trenchcoat, and in doing so, scaring away the riff raff..  I remember being 17 and using my fake id to get in to bars there and thinking if this fails he is going to take me into some back alley and kill me.

ever since ben worked at that bar we all become really cool with “dude”, and everytime we come to landsdowne to see a show or get a drink or whatever he makes sure we are taken care of, and it turns out he is one of the nicest guys I have ever met.

“peace love and grooviness”  is this head bouncers moto.

I’ve always wanted to talk to him more and really hear his story, because this is not your average joe.  This guy that preaches peace love and grooviness pretty much runs the biggest party district in all of boston.

So to break the monotony of listening to ben’s old bosses playing covers of “sweet caroline” and drinking miller lite out of plastic bottles I decided its time to bro down with “dude”.

so standing out in the freezing cold me and “dude” get into it for about a half hour.

Time stops for this dude, which is why he is so amazing.  This guy with all the stuff he’s supposed to be doing right now, hears a brother asking him about his peace love and grooviness and he knows that I m genuinely interested and that im the kind of guy that always wants to improve my mind, and he just gos and gos and gos.

Turns out he had a rough childhood growing up in southie but had an amazing mother who taught him humility, and the power that comes with it.  went into the marines, was trained to kill and ended up back in boston running the night scene.  his reality is that people are animals and evil.

And then he did it!

dude took me to church on the streets and started talking about the power of Jesus Christ and how that is what raises us above all of this and teaches us how to truly love one another.  This was nothing new to me, I've heard this all before...the idea that the world is a shitty place that we can only escape spiritually through jesus.  I know all this too well.  I thanked him for his story and told him that I appreciate seeing him as a representation of Christianity because it felt a whole lot more honest and real than 99% of the other religious stuff out there.

However I begged to differ.

Next thing I knew, me and “dude” who I was always scared of during my first years in boston were now having an intellectual conversation and he was allowing me to be on the same plane with him.

I went on and on about how human nature is good and that everyone is loaded up with bullshit their entire lives and it squashes that goodness. but everyone crys the same and laughs the same, and everyone wants to be happy and good.

While we were talking some suave Indian dude rolls up in his nice car with his hot girl, and starts yelling at dude.

Dude obliges and says “hey man”.

Dude then turns to me and says…see that guy..he’s a bad guy, he just wants his girl to know that he knows me, and I oblige out of humility.

I understand what hes saying, shit I’ve done it before.  I remember a while ago I had a girlfriend that I took to landsdowne and I couldn’t wait to show off to her that I was cool with “dude”.  However I also knew that this was just loads of insecurity on my part, and knew that it was the exact same thing with the Indian guy...and ultimately pointed to his goodness..because we are all scared in our insecurities.

Anyways the conversation went on like this for a while and finally I was pulled away by ben and his crew of girls all yelling at me that we are leaving and going and partying in beacon hill, meanwhile im getting texts from my friend at interscope telling me to come bowling with the new found and fob dudes.  Both sound enticing, but now im all cracked out after having this heavy convo with “dude”

So I decide to pass on both and take ben’s scooter home.

as I ride the quiet streets of boston at 1 in the morning freezing my ass off I can’t stop thinking about our conversation.

I realize that the reality that I believe in is probably in line with what barack obama has been talking about with all this “audacity of hope” business...i assume he’s getting at the idea that hope prevails, and that if we focus on goodness in the world and not evil which we tend to do we can create a better picture of heaven on earth for everyone...this is a very powerful thought to have in politics!

it excites me.

screw all the fun partying options, I want to get home so I can read “audacity of hope” and see if this is what he’s talking about.

either I’ve finally started to grow up…or I have become really really lame…probably the later.

Side note…uncle doug…I challenge you to a legal aspects multiple answer test off for not texting me back mother f-er.

peace love and grooviness

I’m living at the bottom of a huge mountain right now

I’m living at the bottom of a huge mountain right now and everyday I wake up at the crack of dawn and the suns coming up and theres snow everywhere and everything just looks so rad. Some random dude gave me a dvd yesterday called “the secret” and I thought it was some kind of mormon evangelism thing or something and i watched the first 5 minutes of it yesterday and its so bizarre..still not sure what it is…but im about to find out because im intrigued by the “burnt dvd from some radom dude titled ‘the secret’ sitting there looking at me”…so who knows after I watch it I may be mormon.

Ive been listening to The Jellyfish a lot lately…I feel like if they were around 10-15 years earlier they would have been huge, but they were doing this huge rock thing when grunge was going on. If you ever see their cd spilt milk in a store get it! Or download it on itunes.. . its amazing! also some of the guys from the jellyfish are in a band called tv eyes which is very cool too...the most 80’s you can get for the year 2006.

By the way…the uk was amazing…loved everyone we were touring with and all the different cities we got to see…me and ethan got jumped in Manchester which sucked big time! But I got to find out what that experience was like...ha. the mcfly dudes are seriously good dudes…very cool and very talented.

Im making a movie right now which is weird, never would have imagined I’d get to do so many things this year…I love it. Its very different than music world though. Everyone is very serious and they always start working at like 5 in the morning so im always done working by the afternoon which is great seeing that in music world im usually not waking up till the afternoon so im going to become a hippie and take advantage of the daylight and mountains and do some snowboarding, hiking and camping this month.

Fall is here…leaves are falling…love it and hate it. I’ve always had mixed emotions about fall…on one hand it’s the most beautiful season and on the other hand cold is coming and daylight is going.

Ben just gave me the new Sam Roberts cd which is awesome…I burnt holes through their last cd I listened to it so much..so hopefully this one will be just as rewarding.

The summer obsession dudes are in town so we are going to rage…should be fun.

Aight…….peace

london is crazy..so different.

im writing you as Chris Gaylor from the rejects sits next to me googling stuff...this hotel is home to at least 5 bands right now..makes for some fun times.

london is crazy..so different. i feel like people don't even eat here..just drink beer. last night i was at a pub with steve (our tour manager), joe and our product manager from singapore who was in town working with some other bands..and there were 3 other people in the pub: 2 older guys and a lady, all of a sudden this guy comes in and starts talking to this lady and they start yelling at each other..and we kind of just sat and watched, not wanting to get involved...and then out of no where this guy pulls this girl out of the pub and starts punching her...and im thinking...what the f...is this real...and i dont even remember going outside but the next thing i new i was wrestling this dude off this girl who was quite bigger then me thinking 3 things, a) this guy's gonna kill me, b) someone needs to call the cops, and c) steve...help me! so i'm holding this guy now and the girl starts taking swings at the guy...and so steve grabs the girl and she starts trying to punch steve yelling "who are you!! get the hell off me!", i push the guy back in the bar and he runs out the front door and the girl chases him and they start fighting again and now a bunch of neighbors come out and the guy runs away...not sure what happened next because the locals didnt seem interested in us getting involved so we gladly left to safer areas...hopefully the cops came..very very weird and nasty! we went back to the hotel all weirded out..sat down to have a drink and this guy hears that we are american so he starts talking to us and i find out he's some computer genius who built the world's largest computer (700 terabytes i believe he said) which was exciting to me since im a computer nerd.

saw "Children of Men" yesterday...had never heard of it but wanted to watch a movie so i bought a ticket and it was amazing!

rode the "big red bus" with ethan and ben...leaving for cardiff tomorrow...ready for some sane countryside!
